Biographical Description
Samuel Lane was a Black man who was enslaved by Andrew Kirkpatrick. He gained freedom on August 21, 1818, when Andrew Kirkpatrick manumitted him.

Lane's date of birth is unknown. New Jersey law restricted manumissions to persons between the ages of 21 and 40; thus, in order to be eligible for manumission in 1818 Lane had to have been born between 1778 and 1797.

Lane was a founding member of the African Association of New Brunswick in 1817, and the records of that organization refer to him variously as "Samuel Lane" or "Samuel Lain." He joined the organization while he was still enslaved, and he continued his membership after he gained freedom.
