Event Description
Samuel Lane was one of the founding members of the African Association of New Brunswick, and his name appears on the first list of subscribers in January 1817. Lane was enslaved at this time. He received a permission slip from enslaver Andrew Kirkpatrick to join the organization.

The following is a transcript of the permission slip signed by Andrew Kirkpatrick:

"I do hereby give permission to my man Sam to become a member of and to attend the African Society in the city of New Brunswick, and to join them in all such things as shall be lawful and necessary, and at the same time consistent with his condition as a slave.
