- Biographical Description
-
William Stone was an enslaver who resided in Woodbridge, NJ. He was the son of William Stone Sr. and Margaret Dix.
He wrote his will on August 24, 1787, and it was proved on October 14, 1788, after his death. The abstract of his will (published in the Calendar of Wills, Vol. 7, 1786-1790) does not mention any enslaved persons; however, it is possible that the abstract is incomplete. In 1801, thirteen years after William Stone's death, one of the executors of his will, Thomas Edgar, manumitted a man named Cato Stone who had been enslaved by William Stone. The manumission certificate issued in 1801 for Cato Stone mentioned that he was set free by the will of William Stone. - Keywords
