- Biographical Description
- Mary Minto (nee Skelton) was born around the 1750s, the daughter of Joseph Skelton (1720-1778). The Skeltons were a Quaker family from the area of Stony Brook, NJ, near Princeton. Mary married mathematician Walter Minto (1753-1796), who served as a professor at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Mary Minto survived her husband by 28 years and lived with her unmarried sister Elizabeth "Betsey" Skelton (c. 1751-1826) in Princeton. In 1804, Mary Minto manumitted a woman named Hannah Oakham after Hannah and her husband Richard Oakham paid 50 pounds for Hannah's freedom. In 1812, Mary Minto manumitted another woman named Gitty, and in 1823 she manumitted a woman named Jane. All of these manumissions were recorded in the township of West Windsor (which was part of Middlesex County at that time). Other enslaved people in Mary Minto's household included Cate Scot and her daughter Grace.
