- Biographical Description
-
Samuel Berrien was an enslaver. He was born in the Rocky Hill area and later lived in the vicinity of Allentown and East Windsor (note that East Windsor was much larger in Berrien's day and this township directly bordered the village of Allentown).
He was descended from a prominent New Jersey family. His father John Berrien was a New Jersey Supreme Court justice and a trustee of Princeton University during the colonial era. The Berrien family owned the Rockingham estate, where George Washington stayed during the American Revolution. - Keywords
