Manumission of Joe (certificate dated 1809-09-11, deed dated 1809-09-11), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 89-90. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Joe, aged 32, was manumitted by George McAroy of South Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. South Amboy township is listed on the certificate of manumission; other historical records indicate that George McAroy resided in the community of Cranberry within the said township (present-day Cranbury).
The certificate of manumission was signed by the Overseer of the Poor of South Amboy (Matthias Rue) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Robert McChesney, John L. Anderson) on September 11, 1809. The document stated that Joe was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood.
On the same day, George McAroy executed a deed of manumission for Joe, signing the document by his X mark. This deed was witnessed by his son George McAroy and Anna Anderson. The deed mentioned that Joe was 32 years old.
These manumission documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on September 14, 1809. - Event Type
