Elizabeth was born in 1816, the child of Catherine, enslaved by Mary Scott of South Brunswick, who would later move to New Brunswick. Elizabeth's father was named James Scott. Her father's freedom status and racial background is uncertain, but it appears likely that he was a free Black man. Elizabeth's birth certificate does not mention any enslaver for James Scott.
Under the provisions of New Jersey's Gradual Abolition Act of 1804, Elizabeth was considered a slave for a term of 21 years and would become eligible for emancipation upon reaching that age.
The birth certificate for Elizabeth (submitted by enslaver Mary Scott to the Middlesex County Clerk in 1835 when Elizabeth was already 18 years old) states: "I gave said child to her father James Scott & his wife." This suggests that at some point between 1816 and 1835, Elizabeth went to live with her father and "his wife." The document does not clarify whether in 1835 John Scott's wife was Elizabeth's mother Catherine or another woman. - Keywords
