Middlesex County Births of Enslaved Children book contains the following record:
Page: 85
Child: Elizabeth
Mother: Catherine
Father: James Scott
Enslaver of mother and child: Mary Scott
Location: South Brunswick, NJ
Birth date: August 1, 1816
Reported date: May 4, 1835
Clerk: Nicholas Booraem
Enslaver Mary Scott signed this document in 1835 in New Brunswick, but she noted that she previously resided in South Brunswick. Elizabeth was 18 years old by the time the enslaver submitted this birth registration. Presumably Elizabeth had been born in South Brunswick. The document also contained an unusual note, stating "I gave said child to her father James Scott & his wife."
The following is a complete transcript of the document:
"Elizabeth
I Mary Scott late of the Township of South Brunswick in the County of Middlesex do hereby certify that a female Negro child named Elizabeth was born of a Negrow woman named Catherine a slave belonging to me on the first day of August one thousand eight hundred and sixteen, and that I gave said child to her father James Scott & his wife.
