- Philip St. Clair was a Black man born around 1802 who was enslaved by Israel Thornal of Woodbridge, NJ. Israel Thornal died in 1819, when Philip St. Clair was about 17 years old. Four years later in 1823, Philip St. Clair was manumitted by Lewis Thornal and Manning Thornal, the executors of the last will and testament of Israel Thornal. The deed of manumission was executed on May 20, 1823. Philip had to wait until he turned 21 to gain freedom because the laws of New Jersey required that candidates for manumission be at least 21 years of age.
