Manumission of Philip St. Clair (deed dated 1823-05-20), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 377. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Philip St. Clair was manumitted by the last will and testament of Israel Thornal of Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The executors of Israel Thornal's estate (Lewis Thornal and Manning Thornal) signed a deed of manumission for Philip St. Clair in May 1823, in the presence of witnesses Jonathan Freeman and David P. Hull. The exact date of the document is uncertain because there is a discrepancy in the dates recorded: the executors wrote out the date May 20, 1823, Judge Ichabod Potter who notarized the document wrote down May 12, 1823. This document was recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) in his Book of Manumissions on June 13, 1823.
Note that Israel Thornal had died in May 1819, four years prior to Philip St. Clair's manumission. Philip had to wait until he turned 21 to gain freedom because the laws of New Jersey required that candidates for manumission be at least 21 years of age. - Event Type
