- Event Description
-
Simon was manumitted by Edward T. Stelle of Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
The certificate of manumission was signed by the Overseers of the Poor of Piscataway (Ephraim Runyon and John Dayton) and Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Samuel Stelle and Enoch Fitz Randolph) on August 30, 1823. The document stated that Simon was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood. Simon's exact age was not recorded in the document. This document was recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on September 5, 1823 on page 388 of his Book of Manumissions.
The deed of manumission was executed on September 2, 1823, by Edward T. Stelle in the presence of witnesses William M. Stelle and Abel Stelle. On March 1, 1825, Edward T. Stelle appeared before Justice of the Peace Nicholas Booream Jr. to acknowledge his signature on the deed, and the deed was then recorded on the same day by Deare in his book on pages 425-426. - Event Type
