Manumission of Cate Centurian (certificate dated 1820-12-18, deed dated 1820-12-18), recorded in Manumissions and Removals Book, p. 331. Middlesex County (N.J.) Records, 1688-1929, Vol. XI (MC 784.1). Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.
- Event Description
-
Cate Centurian, aged 28, was manumitted by Henry Dye of West Windsor, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
Since Henry Dye happened to be the Overseer of the Poor of West Windsor, he signed the manumission certificate in his official capacity as the Overseer, and the certificate was also signed by two Justices of the Peace for Middlesex County (Andrew Rowan and William Tindall) on December 18, 1820. The document stated that Cate Centurian was examined in court and met the eligibility requirements for manumission in New Jersey, i.e. the person was 21 to 40 years old and was "sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity" of obtaining a livelihood.
The deed of manumission was executed on December 18, 1820, by Henry Dye (in his capacity as Cate Centurian's enslaver and manumitter).
These documents were recorded by the Middlesex County Clerk (William P. Deare) on December 21, 1820. - Event Type
