- Biographical Description
- A Black man, whose name has not been recorded, was captured by the New Jersey militia "from the enemy" during the Revolutionary War circa 1777. This man was previously enslaved by a Loyalist. After he was captured, he was sold by American patriots at public auction. Colonel John Neilson paid 55 pounds for the man. Neilson probably became the man's new legal owner; however, it is not entirely clear from the archival record whether Neilson purchased the man for himself or for someone else.
