Charles was a Black man who lived in Trenton. His date and place of birth is unknown, and his freedom status is uncertain. It appears that in 1818 he was living as a free man. He worked for Barnt DeKlyn of Bow Hill Mansion, and absconded together with a woman named Tine, who had been enslaved in DeKlyn's household. DeKlyn posted a runaway ad for Tine in June 1818 where he described Charles as a man "of middling stature, smart and active, brought up as a house servant."
Charles had lived with Mr. Edmund Burk of Trenton as a hostler for a time prior to working for DeKlyn. - Keywords
