- Biographical Description
- Nun was a Black man who lived in Stillwater, Sussex County, NJ, in the early 19th century. He was enslaved by Abraham Shaver (or Shafer), the proprietor of the Shafer Grist Mill. Nun was married to a woman named Betty, who was also enslaved by Abraham Shaver. Nun was the father of Betty's son Robert (as confirmed by Robert's birth certificate) and most likely also the father of Betty's younger children Ester and Harriet, although Ester and Harriet's birth records are missing the father's name (the father's name was rarely recorded on Black children's birth certificates in New Jersey).
