Event Description
Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:

Child: Ester
Mother: Betty
Enslaver of mother and child: Abraham Shaver
Location: Stillwater
Birth date: July 17, 1816
Recorded date: January 10, 1817
Clerk: Green

Other historical records indicate that enslaver Abraham Shaver was the owner of the Shafer Grist Mill in Stillwater. Thus it can be inferred that the child was born in Stillwater.

Although this birth record does not list Ester's father, it can be inferred that her father was a man named Nun, Betty's husband who was the father of Ester's older brother Robert.

The same slip of paper contains a separate birth record for Charles, son of Nance.
