Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:
Child: Kate
Mother: name not listed
Enslaver of mother and child: Jacob Hornbeck
Location: Sussex County (Locality not specified)
Birth date: February 14, 1829
Recorded date: March 3, 1829
Clerk: Chandler
This record does not specify the locality within Sussex County. However, other birth certificates filed by Jacob Hornbeck list him as a resident of Sandyston. Thus, it can be inferred that Kate was also born in Sandyston.
The same slip of paper also reported the birth of a girl named Phebe, born in 1827.
The name of the mother was not listed on the birth certificate. It is possible that the mother was a woman named Yon who had given birth to 4 other children in Hornbeck's household between 1818 and 1825. - Event Type
