Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:
Child: Cate
Mother: Bets
Enslaver of mother and child: Richard Wesbrooks
Location: Sussex County (Locality not listed)
Birth date: December 10, 1809
Clerk: not listed, presumed Johnson
The birth record is written out on a thin strip of paper that appears to have been ripped away from a larger sheet, and on the reverse side there is some writing in a different hand that seems unrelated to the birth of Cate. The reverse says, "Wantage 13th June 1814 Dear Sir please to be so good as to Deliver to Mr Killgore the Executors the boy" and then cuts off. The enslaver may have written the birth record on the back of an old letter that he no longer needed. Although the start of the letter on the reverse side seems unrelated to Cate, the fact that the old letter is dated 13 June 1814 suggests that Richard Wesbrooks waited at least four and a half years before reporting Cate's birth to the County Clerk. - Event Type
