Biographical Description

John Johnson served as the Clerk of the Court of Common Please for Sussex County (often referred to as the Sussex County Clerk) in the early 19th century. He was appointed in 1805 and reappointed in 1810. In this role, he was responsible for maintaining county records related to the births and manumissions of enslaved people. After serving as the County Clerk, he was appointed a judge in Sussex County in 1816, thus he is often referred to in local histories as "Judge John Johnson."

He submitted a birth certificate in 1827 indicating that he had an enslaved woman named Betsey, and Betsey's baby boy Joe, in his household in Newton.
