Event Description

Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:

Child: Johnson Mogull
Mother: described as "a slave belonging to me," but name not listed
Enslaver of mother and child: Thomas Lawrence
Location: Hamburg, NJ
Birth date: 1 Jan 1809
Recorded date: 30 Jan 1810
Clerk: John Johnson

Thomas Lawrence enclosed 12 cents with the birth certificate to pay the County Clerk for the service of recording the child's birth.

Notably, in this birth certificate, enslaver Thomas Lawrence wrote, "I now transmit to you this letter as a certificate of the birth of a negro child from a slave belonging to me in addition to one of whom I heretofore certified." This suggests that Lawrence had previously submitted another birth certificate for a different child. However, the earlier birth certificate has not been found among Sussex County records; it is likely that the county records are incomplete and have not all survived to the present day. There is one additional certificate submitted by Thomas Lawrence for a child named Gabriel who was born several years later in 1813.
