- Event Description

Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains two separate birth records for Isaac, son of Peggy, submitted years apart.
The original birth certificate was submitted by his first enslaver, David Van Deren, 7 months after Isaac was born, and was filed by County Clerk John Johnson. The following is a transcript of the original certificate from microfilm image 411:
"Born of the body of my Slave Peggy on the 4th day of May 1811 - a male child named Isaac - the Clerk of Sussex is required to record the same -
David VnDeren
NB. The child is a molatta"
Then, in February 1825, when Isaac was 13 years old, another certificate was submitted for him by his second enslaver John VanDeren, who also simultaneously filed delayed records for Isaac's siblings Mungo and Juliann. This certificate was filed by County Clerk Ephraim Green. The following is a transcript of the later certificate from microfilm image 367:
"This will certify that my Black boy named Isaac son of my slave Peg was born the first Day of May 1811 then the Property of David VnDeren Esqr
John VanDeren"
It has been inferred that the date of birth written in the original certificate is the more accurate date. - Event Type
