Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:
Child: Harry
Mother: name not listed
Enslaver of mother and child: Martin Cole
Location: Sussex County (locality not specified)
Birth date: 14 September 1808
Recorded date: 23 May 1809
Clerk: Johnson
This record for Harry was submitted by Samuel D. Westfall on behalf of Martin Cole. Westfall sent a slip of paper to Clerk Johnson to report the birth of a Black girl named Deborah in Westfall's household, and Westfall signed the note. Below Westfall's signature, there was a postscript that stated:
"& other for Martin Cole Born in the year 1808 the 14th Sepr named Harry."
No further information was provided about Harry, and Martin Cole did not sign the record. The document did not list the child's place of birth, but Westfall and Cole were both known to be residents of Montague. Thus it can be inferred that the child was born in Montague. - Event Type
