Jonathan Dickinson (1688-1747) was a leading Presbyterian minister during the Great Awakening. He was born in Hatfield, MA, and lived most of his life in Elizabeth, New Jersey (now called Elizabeth). He was the founding president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), although he died about a year after the college was established.
Dickinson was an enslaver. See Cailin Hong's essay "Jonathan Dickinson" on the Princeton & Slavery Project website for more information about Dickinson and his opinions about slavery and enslavers' responsibility for the religious education of the people they held in bondage. - Keywords
