- Biographical Description
- John Maclean Jr (1800-1886) was the tenth president of Princeton University (then called the College of New Jersey). He was the son of the college's chemistry professor John Maclean Sr (1771-1814) and grew up with enslaved people in his father's household in Princeton. According to a review of historical records by Craig Hollander, President Maclean was not a slaveholder in adulthood. See Hollander's article on the Princeton & Slavery Project website for more information about Maclean's views on slavery and his work to promote Princeton as a school for slaveholding Southern elites.
