Union is a township located in Union County, New Jersey. It was officially incorporated as a separate municipality in 1808 from portions of Elizabeth Township, while this area was still part of Essex County. With the formation of Union County in 1857, Union Township became part of Union County.
During the colonial era, the area of present-day Union Township was known as Connecticut Farms. It was the site of the Battle of Connecticut Farms during the Revolutionary War in 1780. Well into the 19th century, local residents referred to their community as Connecticut Farms, and a neighborhood in Union retains that name to this day.
