Runaway ad for James, by Peter Stuls, "Eight Dollars Reward," Trenton Federalist, March 25, 1805.
- Event Description
-
On Monday, February 18, 1805, a Black boy named James, aged about 15, ran away from his enslaver in Cranberry, Middlesex County, NJ (now Cranbury). The enslaver submitted a runaway ad to the Trenton Federalist newspaper about 5 weeks later. The enslaver's name was printed in the newspaper as "Peter Stuls." However, as the family name "Stuls" has not been found in any New Jersey cemetery records from the 19th century, it seems likely that the name was printed wrong in the newspaper.
