The Republic of Haiti is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It occupies the western portion of the island, while the Dominican Republic is located on the east side of the island.
Haiti won its independence as the result of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), a massive slave revolt that resulted in the overthrow of the European colonial power and the establishment of the first Black republic in the Caribbean. In the course of the Haitian Revolution, plantations were confiscated from European colonists. Some of the ousted planters relocated to the United States. Prior to the revolution, the west side of the island was under French rule and was called Saint-Domingue. - Country
