- Description
- Scotch Plains is a township in Union County, New Jersey. The township was originally incorporated as Fanwood township in 1878 (from portions of Westfield and Plainfield townships), and was later renamed Scotch Plains in 1917. Prior to the establishment of Union County in 1857, this area was part of Essex County. The name Scotch Plains was associated with this area long before Fanwood/Scotch Plains was incorporated as a separate township. Some slavery-era records from the early 19th century mention Scotch Plains as a place in Essex County.
