- Description
- Westfield is a town in Union County, New Jersey. It was originally formed from a portion of Elizabeth township in the 1790s, while this area was still part of Essex County (Union County did not exist until 1857). Westfield was originally much larger than it is today and included areas that would break off to form several surrounding municipalities later in the 19th century. Portions of Rahway, Plainfield, Cranford, Scotch Plains (formerly known as Fanwood), and Mountainside were originally part of Westfield. Thus, slavery-era records that mention Westfield could be referring to locations inside these other modern municipalities.
