- Description
- Saint Croix is one of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Today, Saint Croix is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, together with nearby Saint Thomas and Saint John. Saint Croix is the largest of the three islands. The United States purchased the three islands from Denmark in 1917. Saint Croix was under Danish control from 1733 until 1917. Since the early 18th century, the Danish colonists developed Saint Croix as a sugar plantation economy that relied on enslaved labor. Slavery was abolished in the Danish West Indies after the 1848 Revolution in Denmark.
