Wanno was a Black man born circa 1780. In the late 18th century, he was enslaved on the Beverwyck plantation in Morris County, New Jersey (in present-day Parsippany). The plantation belonged to Lucas Von Beverhoudt, a wealthy planter who relocated to Morris County from the Danish West Indies (present-day U.S. Virgin Islands) in 1779.
According to Joseph Taylor, who held Wanno in slavery in the early 19th century, Wanno spoke English with a distinct West Indian accent. It is possible that Wanno may have been born in St. Croix on the plantation known as the Work & Rest Estate. Lucas Von Beverhoudt maintained this plantation as an absentee landlord in the 1780s after he already moved to New Jersey. An inventory of all of the residents of the Work & Rest Estate in December 1786 recorded 232 enslaved people, and it included a child listed as "Wano."
Lucas Von Beverhoudt died in 1796. Wanno is probably the person listed as "Warnoe" on the inventory for Lucas Von Beverhoudt's estate that was created in January 1797.
Wanno's next enslaver was Joseph Taylor, who lived in Perth Amboy. Wanno ran away from Taylor's house in Perth Amboy in the summer of 1802 and was seen in Newark after his escape. At this time, Wanno was about 22 years old. Whether he was eventually captured or succeeded in escaping for the long term is uncertain. - Keywords
