- Description
-
Pequannock is a township located in Morris County, New Jersey. It was one of the earliest three townships formed in Morris County in the early 18th century. Pequannock was originally much larger than it is today and it occupied about a third of Morris County (the northern portion of the county). Over time, the boundaries of Pequannock shrank as parts of the township broke off to create many surrounding municipalities, including present-day Jefferson, Rockaway, Boonton, Montville, Butler, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, and Riverdale. Thus, slavery-era records that mention Pequannock may be referring to places in northern Morris County that are outside the present-day boundaries of Pequannock Township.
Early historical documents that discuss the township use a variety of spellings, including Poquanick, Poquanock, and Pequanack. - Locality
