Bergen Township was a historical township that existed on the west bank of the Hudson River in northern New Jersey from the colonial era until the Civil War. This township broke up into smaller municipalities in the 19th century and no longer exists.
Many records from the slavery era mention Bergen Township. Most (though not all) of these early records are referring to the area that is now part of modern Jersey City.
Bergen Township was formed in Dutch colonial New Netherland in 1661, three years before the colony was taken over by the English and became New Jersey. Originally, when Bergen Township was formed, it encompassed within its boundaries all of the area of present-day Hudson County that lies between the Hudson River and the Hackensack River (i.e., all of modern Hudson County except Kearny and Harrison). The township shared the name with the surrounding county, because this area was then part of Bergen County, and the modern Hudson County did not yet exist.
In the 19th century, Bergen Township broke up into Jersey City, Bayonne, North Bergen, and several other small municipalities along the Hudson River. In 1840, the area of the historical Bergen Township broke off from Bergen County to form the new Hudson County. Bergen Township ceased to exist in 1862. - Locality
