- Description
- The New York Marine Hospital was a facility established in 1799 in Staten Island in the town of Castleton. It was located in the vicinity of the present-day St. George Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry. The National Lighthouse Museum is located on the former grounds of the hospital complex. The hospital complex was colloquially known as "the Quarantine." Ships arriving at New York Harbor were inspected by health officers, and if communicable diseases, such as yellow fever or smallpox, were found on board, then all passengers disembarked at the hospital facility and were held for quarantine. The hospital was burned down in 1858 in what is known as the Staten Island Quarantine War.
