Rev. Abraham Beach was an Episcopalian clergyman and enslaver. he was born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1740. After his ordination in England in 1767, he came to work as a missionary in the area of New Brunswick and Piscataway in New Jersey. After the Revolutionary War, he went to pastor the Trinity Church in New York City, but it appears he continued to maintain a farm in the New Brunswick area while he lived in New York City. He was elected a trustee of Queen's College (now Rutgers University) in 1787. He was active in the diocese of New York until about 1813 and then retired to his farm near New Brunswick.
When the African Association of New Brunswick was established in 1817, Rev. Beach gave permission to his enslaved man named Cato to join the organization. Rev. Beach also became a patron of the organization himself, and his name appears on the 1817 membership roll together with Cato. - Keywords
