-
On March 1, 1817, the Rev. Abraham Beach, an Episcopalian minister who had a farm near New Brunswick, gave permission to an enslaved Black man named Cato to join the African Association of New Brunswick. Cato's permission slip was preserved in the organization's manuscript collection. Cato's name also appears on the organization's membership roll for 1817 (in the minute book for the association). Evidently, Rev. Abraham Beach also joined the association as a patron, and his name appears on the membership roll as well.
