Runaway ad for Wanno, by Joseph Taylor, "FIFTEEN DOLLARS REWARD," Centinel of Freedom, August 10, 1802, p. 3.
- Event Description
-
In July 1802 (or earlier), a 22-year-old Black man named Wanno ran away from enslaver Joseph Taylor, who lived in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The exact date of Wanno's escape from Perth Amboy is uncertain, but it is known that he was seen in Newark on July 18, 1802. Joseph Taylor published a runaway ad offering a reward of $15 for Wanno's capture. The runaway ad indicated that Wanno had roots in the West Indies and was formerly enslaved by "Mr. Beaverhout." This appears to be a reference to Lucas Von Beverhoudt, the owner of the Beverwyck plantation in the area of Parsippany, Morris County, who was from the Danish West Indies.
