Runaway ad for Diner, by Joseph Barron, "TEN DOLLARS REWARD," Centinel of Freedom, July 9, 1805, p. 3.
Middlesex County Births of Enslaved Children, page 35. Archival location: Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries. Middlesex County (N.J.). Records, 1688-1929 (MC 784.1). Vol. X. - Event Description
- Dinah, a 17-year-old Black girl who ran away from Joseph Barron in 1805, was eventually returned to Barron's household in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. This capture event is not discussed in any historical documents, but it is inferred from records that document Dinah's presence at Joseph Barron's house in 1806 and later. The exact date, place, and circumstances of Dinah's capture or return are unknown. Her escape (documented in a runaway ad that Joseph Barron published in the Centinel of Freedom newspaper) took place on the night of July 4, 1805. The following year, on December 20, 1806, Dinah gave birth to her son Saul at Barron's household (documented in Middlesex County birth records).
