- Biographical Description
- George Green was a man of African descent who lived in the area of Basking Ridge in Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. As of 1817, he was a free man, but it is uncertain whether he was born free or was born into slavery and later gained freedom. He was married to a woman named Sarah, who was enslaved by Joseph Annin. Sarah's enslaver sold her to the Rev. Robert Finley, the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge, and Robert Finley went on to free Sarah in 1817. George Green was mentioned in Sarah's manumission documents, and it is possible (but not definitively confirmed) that he helped buy his wife's freedom.
