- Biographical Description
- Sarah Green was a Black woman who lived in the area of Basking Ridge in Bernards Township, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the early 19th century. She was married to a free man of color named George Green. Sarah was enslaved by Joseph Annin, who sold her to the Rev. Robert Finley, the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge. After buying Sarah, Robert Finley went on to free her in 1817. Sarah's husband George Green was mentioned in Sarah's manumission documents, and it is possible (but not definitively confirmed) that he helped buy Sarah's freedom.
