- Event Description
-
Burlington County Deed Book A, Folio 163, contains a manumission record for Gabriel Quon, who was released from slavery on 24 July 1786 in Mansfield. Gabriel Quon was manumitted by John Pope. The manumission document states that Gabriel Quon was an adult between 21 and 35 years old, but the exact age was not recorded. Considering that he was described as a "lad," he was probably a young man in his 20s.
The document was entered into the book by the County Clerk (John Phillips) on 13 February 1787. The manumission record was signed by the Overseers of the Poor for the township (Joseph Shreeve and Abednego Wright) and Justices of the Peace for Burlington County (Thomas Fenimore and Israel Shreeve).
The source document was scanned by the New Jersey State Archives, which houses the original deed book.
Records on page 164 and 165 in the same book indicate that Gabriel Quon's family members, Sip Quon and Adam Quon, were also manumitted by the Pope family on the same day. - Event Type
