- Description
- Fairfield is a township in Cumberland County, New Jersey. It was formed in 1697 and was originally part of Salem County until the creation of Cumberland County in 1748. Fairfield was originally much larger than it is today and stretched from the Cohansey River to the Maurice River. In 1772, the southern part of Fairfield broke off to become Downe Township (this later split into Downe and Commercial). In 1801, a portion of Fairfield was given to form Millville. Lawrence Township broke off from Fairfield in 1885, while a small territory from Bridgeton City was added in 1888, finalizing the modern form of Fairfield Township.
