- Biographical Description
- John Stokes was a white man who lived in Newton Township, Gloucester County (in present-day Camden County), in the early 19th century. He was one of the co-executors and heirs of the estate of Jacob Stokes, who died in Newton circa 1805. He manumitted multiple people whom he inherited from Jacob Stokes. Some of the manumissions were performed together with Abigail Stokes (the widow of Jacob Stokes), and some with another man named Jacob Stokes (not the decedent, but another heir and co-executor of the estate). John's exact familial relationship to Abigail and the two Jacobs is uncertain.
