The following manumission record from Gloucester County was transcribed by the Historical Records Survey Project of the Works Progress Administration. The transcript was originally published in 1940 in the book titled Transcriptions of Early County Records of New Jersey: Gloucester County Series Slave Documents. The transcript is reproduced below as it appeared in that book.
Note that the manumission deed for 21-year-old Mina was signed jointly by Abigail Stokes (identified here as the widow of Jacob Stokes) and John Stokes. Although the deed for Mina does not clarify the relationship between Abigail and John Stokes, other manumissions performed by John indicate that he was one of the heirs and co-executors of the estate of Jacob Stokes (Abigail's deceased husband).
