Event Description

Sussex County Births of Enslaved Children microfilm contains the following record:

Child: Dave
Mother: Dine
Enslaver of mother and child: Robert Kennedy
Location: Greenwich Township
Birth date: May 4, 1806
Recorded date: May 12, 1806
Clerk: John Johnson

Robert Kennedy lived at a property that is now on the National Register of Historic Places under the name Kennedy House and Mill. It can be inferred that Dave was born on this property.

The father's name was not listed on the birth certificate. Robert Kennedy's will, written in 1810, reveals that there was an older Black man named Dave in the household, and he was mentioned together with Dine. From this will, it can be inferred that the elder Dave was likely the father of Dine's child.
