Pemberton is a community located along North Branch Rancocas Creek in Burlington County, New Jersey. The historical center of the community is now Pemberton borough, and it is surrounded by the larger municipality of Pemberton township.
The community has its roots in David Budd's industrial mill that he established on Budd's Run as early as 1740. After David Budd formed the New Mills Company in 1752 and started developing saw and grist mills on the Rancocas, the community became known as New Mills. During the colonial era, New Mills was not yet a separate municipality. The northern part of the community (north of North Branch Rancocas Creek) was officially part of New Hanover township, while the southern part of the community (south of the creek) was officially part of Northampton township (now called Mount Holly). Thus, colonial-era slavery records for the New Mills/Pemberton area will be found among New Hanover and Northampton township records.
By the early 19th century, the community became known as Pemberton. Parts of New Hanover and Northampton townships broke off to form Pemberton borough and the surrounding Pemberton township in the first half of the 19th century. - Locality
