- Description

Northampton Township was a municipality that used to exist in Burlington County from 1688 to 1931. The township was originally very large and occupied the majority of the county, stretching from the Burlington Township line in the north all the way to the Atlantic Ocean in the south. Official records for the slavery era often refer to Northampton Township, but this name is no longer in use in the modern era, and the original township has splintered into many smaller municipalities.
The central municipality that has roots in Northampton Township is Mount Holly, which is the seat of Burlington County. The territory of present-day Mount Holly is only a tiny fraction of the original territory of Northampton Township.
In 1740, a portion of Northampton township was given to Little Egg Harbor. Other than this division, the boundaries of Northampton Township remained stable in the 18th century. In 1796, the Burlington County court and jail moved from Burlington to Northampton (to the area of Mount Holly). In the 19th century, parts of Northampton broke off to form Washington, Pemberton, Coaxen (later Southampton), Westhampton, and Lumberton, until only a small nucleus of the original township territory remained. That small remaining portion of Northampton Township was officially renamed Mount Holly in 1931. - Locality
