Mount Holly is a township in Burlington County, located along the North Branch Rancocas Creek. It has been the seat of Burlington County since 1796, when the county court moved here from Burlington. Mount Holly was originally part of the historical Northampton township, and many slavery-era records refer to the area as Northampton. Bridgetown was another name associated with this area during the colonial era.
The historical Northampton Township was formed in 1688. The township was originally very large and occupied the majority of the county, stretching from Burlington township all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, colonial-era records that mention Northampton township could be referring to Mount Holly or to locations that lie far outside the modern boundaries of Mount Holly. In the 19th century, Northampton Township began to splinter into smaller municipalities. Parts of Northampton broke off to form Washington, Pemberton, Coaxen (later Southampton), Westhampton, and Lumberton, until only a small nucleus of the original territory remained. The remaining portion of Northampton Township was renamed Mount Holly in 1931. - Locality
