- Description
-
Medford is a township in Burlington County. It was originally settled as a village within the boundaries of Evesham Township during the early colonial era, and this area was known as Upper Evesham. The name Medford became associated with the village in the early 19th century. By 1847, Medford broke off from the larger Evesham Township and formed a separate municipality. Soon after forming its own municipality, Medford gave parts of its territory to Shamong (in 1852) and to Lumberton (in 1860). Additionally, a portion of Medford was taken to form the borough of Medford Lakes in 1939.
Researchers of slavery in Medford and the surrounding areas may also want to review records filed under Evesham Township, since that was the main administrative entity for this area during the slavery era. - Locality
