- Description
-
Shamong Township is located in Burlington County, New Jersey. It was incorporated in 1852 from parts of Medford, Washington, and Southampton townships. During the colonial era, the western part of present-day Shamong was officially within Evesham township and the eastern part was within Northampton township. For this reason, early records for the area may be found among Evesham or Northampton records.
Indian Mills is a neighborhood in Shamong that was the site of the Brotherton Indian Reservation in the 18th century. This was the first Indian Reservation in America, and it was active from 1758 to 1801.
A part of Shamong was given to Woodland in 1866, and another part given to Tabernacle in 1901. - Locality
